To be honest, I struggled with figuring out what to write for this post. Recently I’ve been encountering writer’s block with some of my blog posts. As I mentioned last week, I really want to provide you with content that you find valuable. Anyway, after hours and hours — no joke — of contemplating what to write for this, what kept coming back to me was the word “classic.”
While I do incorporate many trendy pieces into my wardrobe, I would describe my overall style as very feminine and timeless. I tend to purchase clothes that can be restyled and that never go out of style. By doing so, the number of outfits you can create largely increases. Since I get complimented so often on my classic style, today I’m sharing my tips for creating a classic wardrobe!
Tip #1 – Choose Solid Colors
Bold patterns and prints can be trendy, not to mention they stand out! While everyone needs some pieces like these, to create a more classic wardrobe I always recommend to focus on solid colored pieces. These types of pieces can be paired together to create way more outfit combinations. As you can see in my outfit, I paired a few neutral solid colored pieces together. Y’all know that neutral colors are my favorite! This also works with darker colors. For example, in the fall I tend to pair greens, browns and blacks together.
Tip #2 – Think About Items Before Purchasing
I cannot express how important this tip is! Prior to buying an item, there are a few things I think about. Can I wear this top multiple ways? Do I already own pieces that go with it? Can it be worn during various seasons? The more “yes” answers I am able to give to these questions, the greater chances that an item is a classic piece.
Tip #3 – Choose Pieces That Can Be Layered
Part of what makes my look classic is that the beige cardigan layers well over the white v-neck blouse. This works not only because the colors pair together nicely, but because there is some variation in the texture. Layering allows you to maximize the number of times you can wear a certain clothing item. Additionally, when done well, it makes you look like you’re wearing an outfit instead of just wearing clothes.
Tip #4 – Stick With Classic Accessories
While certain handbags or trendy pieces of jewelry can be fun, often times they can make too much of a statement, ruining what would otherwise be a classic outfit. I, of course, do have pieces like these in my wardrobe, but I have WAY more classic accessories. Stick with more neutral colored pieces of jewelry and bags that will never go out of style.
Tip #5 – Don’t Get Caught Up On Trendy Pieces
This may seem super obvious. I mean, if you’re looking to build a classic wardrobe, why would you buy trendy items? However, at some point or another we have all given in to the trendy pieces. To help mitigate this issue, think whether you will wear the item five or ten years down the road. Chances are you aren’t going to be rocking those oh-so-popular yellow lens sunglasses after this season is over so why spend money on them? However, if a certain “trend” like off-the-shoulder has been in for a couple years, chances are you’re safe to buy that OTS dress you’re obsessing over.
